Slughorn contemplated the box of crystallized pineapple, searching for the biggest piece. The candy was a welcome relief after spending his night tending to annoying children – yet again.

Sometimes he hated being Head of Slytherin House. Some of his wards didn’t have the maturity level of flobberworms, and some caused more trouble than untended salamanders.

Knock.

“Professor?”

“Tom! Come in!”

Now there was a boy who would go far; he just knew it. Tom was a valuable member of the Slug Club, and worthy of his time and mentorship. Slughorn was sure he’d reap enormous benefits from helping Tom Riddle….

Hehehe :)

I'm loving your attempts to branch out.

This is hilarious in a dark sort of way. More hilarious than dark though, I suppose.

Oh, Slughorn, you poor naive soul.

Yeah I meant it to be kind of funny I think. I also don't exactly like Slughorn, so this was a written sort of WHAM!

Yay for branching out and you liking it!

Well, I think that he is supposed to be a bit despicable, and I think that you captured it well.

Slughorn the nimble and dextrous, but not nimble and dextrous enough. OutSlytherined. Of course Riddle was atypical, that just makes it all the more chilling...

Slughorn was a fool. If it wasn't for his ambition, I doubt he would have made Slytherin.

Nice glimpse of his night just before the horrid memory. I like when people depict missing moments in canon.

Yeah, I don't really care for Slughorn - think of him as a great doddering fool - but I've been trying to branch out a bit and not always write Malfoys or Blacks.

And thank you! I enjoy thinking about the missing events in canon, and trying to write little scenes for them.
