I'm a mess

I'm still working on posting my fics to AO3 -- it's gonna take me a while. At first I was doing one a day, then I realized I wrote SEVENTY fics in 2010 (many were drabbles, but still), so I've upped that.

I'm laughing at myself because I did a few "end of the year" meme things, and every year I wrote: "Goal for next year: Back up my fic to AO3."

From 2012:

Do you have any fanfic goals for the New Year?
1. Update LJ with all fic.
2. Update DW with all fic.
3. Update AO3 with all fic.

LMAO. Better late than never, right?

I'm also now realizing that I never posted the majority of fics I wrote for fests and events to my LJ, either. I'm the kind of fanfic author I hate -- I always find it so annoying when I can't find an author's entire back listing of stories. Ah, well, once I'm finished, it's going to be interesting to see just how many HP stories I've done, because I've forgotten a lot of them.

Here's a question: I have one fic that I hate. It's one of those "I should've dropped out of that fest rather than submit it." Do I still archive it for posterity or hope it gets buried?
dexstarr: (Default)
Tempted to sign up for [livejournal.com profile] hp_crossgenfest. I haven't done a fest in... 3 years? Maybe 4.

I am really happy that so many of the femslash prompts have been claimed!

Quick, someone talk me out of it! (Or into it, as the case may be.)

Snagged from [livejournal.com profile] gamma_x_orionis because I need something to jumpstart me again. 2013 was pretty dreary, 2014 will be too, so I need to get back into LJ and fandoms to have something to keep me sane.

So! Give me a topic or question and I shall answer it. Pretty much anything goes.

Could someone read over my 200 word drabble for [livejournal.com profile] hp_halloween? If you need a beta for your entry, I'll happily return the favor. I'm still fiddling a bit with it, and so should be sending it out Saturday evening.

Also, if anyone is so inclined, I could use a beta/idea bouncer for my [livejournal.com profile] darkwitches and Kinky Kristmas fics. I've had difficulty writing fic lately. I end up writing a fic only to hate it, which is not a pattern I'd like to continue.

Everything is femslash, variety of pairings.

Thanks! Comment or email dexslytherin@gmail.com

In the interests of hopefully not hating my fic for [livejournal.com profile] darkwitches once I finish it, I'd love if someone would let me bounce my idea off them. Lately I've absolutely hated the fics I've written for fests and have dropped out because I wasn't able to come up with something else I liked.

I'd also be grateful if I could line up a beta.

Quick details: femslash, older couple. More details available through PM or email (dexslytherin@gmail.com). I can't give too much away.

Thanks!

After [livejournal.com profile] gamma_x_orionis's not so subtle advertising :P, I've decided to sign up for my first big bang: [livejournal.com profile] heroinebigbang. I actually signed up for one last year, to co-write with a friend, and that didn't work out at all. Here's hoping this time works out better. I need practice at writing longer stories, so this should be just the thing.

Naturally, I'm debating signing up for [livejournal.com profile] villainbigbang as well. I want to do a dark!Pansy story, but I think I'll see if there's any interest in a longer version of the fic I'm trying to write for [livejournal.com profile] hp_kinkfest. Which reminds me that my kinkfest posting date is fasting approaching...

I've been having a difficult time getting anything written. I'm also signed up for [livejournal.com profile] dysfuncentine, another great fest. I had an idea pop into my head as soon as I saw a certain prompt, but try as I might, the words just aren't cooperating. I'm feeling restless with just about everything, actually, and I can't pin down the reason. I wonder if it's because of where I am in life right now (aka nowhere), and that's getting to me more than it usually does?

Lastly, I owe comments everywhere. I've been sick for almost a month, between getting a cold and then the flu. I am excited to have all the lovely stories of [livejournal.com profile] hoggywartyxmas to read all at once -- I'm sure I'll be turning to that source of good fic when I need some inspiration. Or to, you know, procrastinate. Same thing with Kinky Kristmas and some other fests.
dexstarr: (domination)
I still have comments to reply to on my last entry, hah, but I'm posting to see if anyone would be able to look through a short fic for me? It's not done, but it will be about 1k or less, and I should have it to you by Saturday, at the latest, and then I'll need to turn it in by the 28th. Femslash, of course. If you'd like more details, email is the best way to get ahold of me during the day: dexslytherin@gmail.com

Thanks!

march 6

I had planned on posting a monthly progress report on the goals I made for 2012, but I think it's going to be bi-monthly, as I missed January. At least I'm posting before March is over.

So, goals. Not doing so well on any of those so far. Yet again I seem to have lost my inspiration for writing fic, which isn't a good thing when I have two fest stories due at the end of the month. And I only have an idea for one of them.

I have been good about one thing — I've been restricting myself on fests big time. I've only signed up for three so far. A few have caught my eye, but I've held back.

I'm in an odd place emotionally. Right now I could really use writing as an escape, but I have trouble motivating myself to write. It's an ugly cycle. I'm going to try and bust my way out of it; I just feel off if I don't have a fic in progress. I keep pondering making a claim, but I'm not sure if that's such a good idea. It's so tempting, though. I'm also pondering doing a big bang, probably [livejournal.com profile] bdsm_fandom … Quick, someone talk me out of it!

Okay, moving past all the emo, whiny stuff. I've fallen head over heels for Lost Girl. Once I get caught up to the most recent episode I'm going in hunt of fanfic.

A belated thank you to [livejournal.com profile] scarletladyy x2, [livejournal.com profile] pale_moonlite, [livejournal.com profile] deirdre_aithne, [livejournal.com profile] thepretender501, and [livejournal.com profile] starduchess for the v-gifts! Getting them brightened my day :)

One of my favorite fics for last year, 'A Tragedy in One Act,' was nominated for the HP Fanfic Fan Poll Awards, in the category "Best Femmeslash Romantic Story." Thank you to whoever nominated me! I consider it an honor, considering the other stories up for voting.

I have been working my way through the excellent stories at [livejournal.com profile] hoggywartyxmas. I'm late, but who doesn't love a comment a month after a story has gone up? I only have three stories left, and if you're looking for something to read, I would recommend any story there. There are now so many characters I want to read more about (Galatea Merrythought, Filius Flitwick, Rita Skeeter, Fawkes, etc), and it's one of those fests that makes me reevaluate my stance on slash. Male slash, that is. Normally I could care less, but when the writing and plot are good, I gobble up a fic. I'm so looking forward to HP Beholder. I'm definitely going to participate this year. I feel ready. And I'm excited for more amazing stories!

Speaking of writing … I am supposed to post at the beginning of February at [livejournal.com profile] hp_kinkfest. I signed up last year, wrote a couple thousand words, and ended up dropping out. I signed up this year with the intent of finishing last year's fic, but I don't know. I'm just not in a kink headspace. I hate to drop out again, but I would rather do that than produce something I don't care for.

I'm working on some of my resolutions for 2012! Well, I have files started. They even have a few words in them.

I'm more on track for [livejournal.com profile] dysfuncentine. I have an idea in my head that is either going to be fantastic or horrible. I'm unsure if the idea will actually portray a dysfunctional relationship, but I'm hoping it works out. Anyone willing to beta or offer some opinions on it when I finish? I haven't started it, but I've got some notes, and I plan to have it done by February 3, a week before the deadline.

I've been thinking a lot about how my writing (and reading) tastes have changed in the past year and a half. I'll probably forget half of what I've thought about, as it's something I tend to think about when driving, and that's not a time to jot down notes!

I'm pretty sure 2012 is going to be a challenging year for me. So I've tried to make reasonable "resolutions." Writing is my main form of relaxation/escape (other than reading), and I know I'm going to need it. I didn't want to overwhelm myself, yet I want some "structure" for the year ahead, so that I accomplish something.

1. Limit my fest/exchange participation to 7.
I've been all over the place since first discovering fests and exchanges, and this year I dropped out of more fests than I'd like to admit. But I didn't drop any exchanges, and that is something I will never do. This year, though, I want to be more selective with what I sign up for, and try to stretch myself.

2. Complete the Greek Mythology Drabble Cycle.
When I claimed HP for this, I did it with the intention of using it to "learn" about characters that are new to me, and that's still my intention.

3. Complete the Rare Pair Shorts Table.
I may change my pairing for this. I'm still thinking about it. 01.24.11 -- pairing changed from Narcissa/Astoria to Septima/Aurora

4. Finish one fic from my idea files/WIP files/dropped fics.
I have tons and tons of files with one or two sentences, and about 20k in unfinished fics. I'd like to finish one of them this year.

5. Write something original!
I may have mentioned this before on here, but I really, really want to try my hand at an original novel. I attempted one, for NaNo, but had to shelve it because I didn't plan ahead, and I had four fest fics due in November. I already have possible publishers bookmarked for submission, and I've also considered self-publishing on Kindle. We'll see. One of my big stumbling blocks is I'd love to have someone (or a few someones, preferably) to bounce ideas and chapters off.

I've been working on pulling together my 2011 fic list, but man. My fic folders are a mess, so it's going to take me a while. I think I'll just redo my masterlist at the same time, which I have been meaning to do for a while. I need to do some cleaning up around here -- change the layout again, fix/update masterlist, pick the fic tables I'm actually going to work on, post fic from 2010 (I should get on that, considering it's almost 2012), etc. I also have a post that's been on my mind for a while, on how my writing has evolved during the year and half I've been in fandom.

I think I'm going to start 2012 with some writing goals, because I'd like to push myself more in the upcoming year. I'll put those up tomorrow, as I'm still considering them. I'm big on accountability; I'm hoping that if they're up somewhere, there's more chance of me actually accomplishing them.

So, not a whole lot here yet, but it's coming. I'm starting 2012 off in the same way I do everything, with plenty of procrastinating ;)

Two posts in one day? I know. I'm trying to be more active.

Snagged from [livejournal.com profile] woldy

Tell me about a story I haven't written (including pairing, if you have one in mind), and I'll give you between one and three sentences from that story.

'Bout time for a meme around these parts.

Comment with "Have a go at me" and I will respond to the following prompts below about you.

1. Something random that reminds me of you.
2. Which color you remind me of.
3. My first memory of you.
4. What character I associate with you.
5. My favorite thing about you.
6. What fandom genre I associate with you.
7. Challenge you to post this on your journal.

Can anyone give my [livejournal.com profile] hp_halloween drabble a quick read? It's only two hundred words, and I'm actually done early, so I'd love to get it beta'ed and in to the mods before it's due.

PM or leave a comment please. Thanks!

Update: I'm good now, thanks!

Newest to do list:

[livejournal.com profile] interhouse_fest — due October 25th, 2011
[livejournal.com profile] mini_fest — due November 18th, 2011
[livejournal.com profile] hoggywartyxmas — due December 5th, 2011
[livejournal.com profile] hp_halloween — awaiting assignment
[livejournal.com profile] hpvalensmut — awaiting assignment
[livejournal.com profile] femslash100 — Greek Mythology table, ongoing

I also have some "20 Random Facts about …" ([livejournal.com profile] hp_random_facts) in progress, because it seems to be a good way to get a handle on characters that are new to me.

In the meantime, I want to make a CDJ for my roleplaying characters. October seems like a good time to do it, since that was when I first got into that. I also need to update my masterlist and profile, and post some of my backlog … stuff I've been meaning to do for months, but haven't yet gotten around to. The problem is that I look at what I wrote last year and think it is utter rubbish.

Meh. I'm feeling so … blah lately, about fic. I know it's normal, but I'm getting sick of this slump I've been in since the beginning of the year. Guess I'll just have to try harder to break it.
dexstarr: (voldie hugs)
I know that a few of you on my friends list knit, so I thought I'd toss this question out there.

I am finally nearing the end of the Slytherin House scarf I started a year ago, and I'm thinking about what project to pick up next. I'd like to do a sweater, but is it worth it? My abilities are confined to knit and purl pretty much, and I have a hard time reading patterns. Can anyone recommend an easy pattern? I'd ideally like a simple pullover. I've tried looking on Ravelry, but I'm just not sure. A sweater seems like such an overwhelming project. But then, I can't think of something else I would actually use....

Also, could I use a yarn like Caron Simply Soft? Or another acrylic? I don't want to spend a ton of money on yarn for a project that might turn out horribly.
dexstarr: (voldie hugs)
Not much has changed since my last to do list post, except that I added some more fests to it, and only crossed one off. I still need to redo my masterlist, clean up fic tables, and post old fic, but getting fest fics done is my priority. I would love to turn some in early for once (doubt that will happen, but I can hope, right?)

[livejournal.com profile] femgenficathon x2 (only one will probably happen)
[livejournal.com profile] hp_tarot
[livejournal.com profile] hp_darkfest
[livejournal.com profile] samhain_smut
[livejournal.com profile] interhouse_fest

I'm at the annoying stage where I have ideas for most of the fests, but nothing will come out when I try to write. Guess that's why I signed up for so many fests, because deadlines usually get me going. Now if it would just work, that would be fantastic.

My real reason for posting is that I need some pairing ideas, preferably femslash. Or something … spooky. Maybe something will spark my imagination.

I did it.

I signed up for [livejournal.com profile] hp_darkfest. [livejournal.com profile] the_stark_words are you ready for it? (btw, so weird to not call you scarysnapey!)

I'm not sure how many of you remember me flailing about last year over my fic for darkfest, but I hope to Merlin this year I do not flail as much. For one, there are two prompts I would like to fulfill, although that is probably wildly ambitious considering that I am last-minute-Dex.

A year ago, I posted my first HP fic.

Even though I have been less active in the past few months than I was when first jumping in, I still enjoy the fandom, and the great people I have met because of it.
