While Harry takes his Potions O.W.L. in the Great Hall, Snape sits in his office and toasts to the boy’s failure.

He does not want him in his N.E.W.T. class next year.

He will not put up with another year of Lily’s eyes staring insolently at him from the face of an ungrateful whelp.

Snape knows not letting Potter in his class next year will crush the boy’s dreams of being an Auror.

He likes that thought; after all, it was Potter’s precious father who crushed Severus Snape’s dreams during his O.W.L. year.

It’s only fair to return the favor.

Severus inhaled sharply; the last thing he wanted was Potter – but one didn’t refuse a gift from the Dark Lord if one wanted to stay in favor. And alive.

Then, across the room, he spotted a familiar pair of brown eyes watching him, clearly pleading ‘please save me, please pick me.’ She was crouched behind the Lestranges, and was, he realized, the solution to his quandary.

“My Lord, you are extremely generous, but respectfully, I would prefer a female….”

The sickly green skull hovering above the destroyed house in Godric’s Hollow tore at his heart, but he’d already howled his grief in Dumbledore’s office, shrieking like a wounded animal.

It hurt to see the place where she and Potter had lived, but this was his last chance…

He found her in the nursery, crumpled on the floor by the crib. Her whelp was gone, but he didn’t care about him. Kneeling next to Lily, he ran a hand through brilliant red hair, closed dull emerald eyes.

He was perusing his books, eyes running over the faded leather spines, searching for the perfect tome to start off his relaxing summer, when the brand on his left arm burned.

“What now?” Irate at having his peace interrupted, hours into his summer holiday, Snape nevertheless fixed an ‘I’m-not-too-annoyed’ expression on his face and Apparated to the Dark Lord’s side.

Mere minutes later he was bowing to the hem of Voldemort’s dark robe. “You summoned me, my Lord?”

Motioning for Snape to rise, Voldemort said, “Yes, Severus. I have tasks for you, now that you aren’t constrained by your…duties…at Hogwarts.”

“You did order me to seduce her, my Lord,” Snape reminded him, the words flowing effortlessly. “She is, for all her knowledge, still a girl. I have to be… romantic.” He sneered the last word, eyes dark.

The Dark Lord nodded. “What progress do you have to report?” He twirled his wand in his long, pale fingers, waiting.

Snape tensed. “She is extremely cautious; I need more time.”

Severus felt his heart beat even faster, winging like a trapped hummingbird, as Albus spoke once more. “And will you do anything necessary to protect Harry Potter from Lord Voldemort?”

“I will.”

A third jet of fire slid from McGonagall’s wand, binding their hands thrice. The magical chains burned bright red, the color of the phoenix perched behind them, then disappeared, glittering into nothingness.

Dumbledore pulled his own wand from his midnight-blue robes, and pointed it at their Bonder. “I’m sorry, Minerva.” He cleared his throat, and said sadly, “Obliviate.”

It’s a guilty indulgence of hers, and he loves to spy. He’s hidden behind a broad oak tree, his favorite spot. A haven when James and Sirius are after him.

Her black school robes are spread on the ground, protecting her delicate skin and crisp uniform from grass stains. Only her white-blonde hair touches the lawn, gold strands mingling with green grass.

It is her pale, pale skin that initially calls to him. He, too, is pale, and thus feels a slight companionship; but he is a jaundiced sort of pale, sallow-toned with midnight-black hair.

But Narcissa, she is perfect.

Every time his left arm burned, when the skull and snake brand called him to the Dark Lord’s side, he went with a treasured secret.

He kept it tucked in the deepest pocket of the suit worn under his black Death Eater robes, the closest it could be to his pale, scarred chest.

His precious image is a clandestine capture of her. Snapped secretly when he’d surprised her with a present: a book wrapped in the scarlet and gold of her damnable Gryffindor. He loved her bright smile, etched forever on magic parchment.

Her happy photograph: his reminder to return.
