“No?”

Pansy smirked at the disbelief in his voice. Draco still wasn’t used to being refused anything, even though the Malfoy name had lost considerable respect since the war.

“No,” she repeated, relishing the wounded look on his face.

“But Pansy – it’s what you’ve always wanted. To be a Malfoy –”

She laughed bitterly, interrupting him. “It’s what I wanted, before. But I happen to know Daddy told you to marry, and you assumed I’d be happy to go along with the idea. But your family isn’t exactly on top, anymore, Draco.”

“Neither is yours,” he shot sullenly.

“No, it’s not.”

Alerted by a mother’s sixth sense, Narcissa snatched the flying dragon from the air seconds before it would have crashed into her head. “Not again,” she growled.

“With reflexes like that, you should’ve been a Quidditch player, my dear,” Lucius drawled behind her, amused by his wife’s predicament. She had been attacked by their son’s current favorite toy several times in the past few minutes.

“Don’t you start, Lucius!” Turning to face him, she squeezed the plush dragon angrily as she said, “Draco thinks it’s hilarious to set his toy on me. I’ve a mind to take it off him.”

"Fly!"

Draco tossed the stuffed Hebridean Black in the air, and then wailed in disappointment as it fell to his lap, wings still tucked to its sides. Undeterred, the little boy whapped the dragon with his toy wand and tried again.

"FLY!"

He burst into tears when the figure fell again. Clutching his toy, Draco turned to his parents. "Daddy?"

Lucius obligingly took the dragon, and tapped it with his own wand. "There," he said, handing it back to his son, only to have it thrown back as the dragon once again failed to spread its wings.

“DADDY! FIX IT!”

The note was crumpled in Pansy’s cold hand, but she’d memorized the words.

“Midnight. Lake.”

The parchment had been delivered to her by Draco’s eagle owl that morning. He usually just pulled her aside in the common room when he wanted to talk to her; she wondered about the change in routine.

So here she was, at midnight, waiting by the lake for Draco. She’d been here at five minutes to midnight, but it was now twelve thirty, and he had yet to show.

But finally she heard his footsteps cracking over fresh snow, and she turned to greet him.
